Fused Glass
Fused glass, also known as warm glass,
is the process of joining overlayed pieces
of glass by fusing them together in a kiln.
Once fused, the now single flat piece of
glass is layed on top of a mold and"slumped" into shape in a second firing.
I enjoy helping people develop their
creative side. The pieces shown on the
right were commissioned as a Christmas
gift by a woman whose husband is Hawaiian.
If you have an idea or a design you would
like to see created into glass, please contact me.
Below are the steps involved.
 Step One: Idea to Paper
Create drawing on grid paper.
Number how many cuts are needed
for each color. Select the glass
you want to use, make sure it is
compatible for fusing.
Step Two: Lay up Glass
Cut your pieces using a glass
cutter and grinding the edges
smooth. Next lay out the pieces
using the template. Apply frit,
small glass that is applied on top
of the glass for texture. In this
case frit was applied to the glass
for the ocean, sand and on top of
the starfish.
Step Three: Fused/Slumped
Once the individual pieces have
been completed they are placed
together and the glass will be
fused in the kiln. Once fired the
fused piece is placed on top of a
mold and fired again. This process
is called "slumping,"and is the
final step.
